POWER Bucks Campaign Launch Thurs Nov 14th!

Dear Ones,

Several Pebble folks have been involved in past activities as POWER Bucks was in its formation stages, an expansion of POWER’s successful interfaith organizing efforts in Philadelphia. During recent months the organization has been in the process of choosing a campaign to work on during the upcoming year. As a congregation Pebble stepped back during this period, and I decided to continue attending the meetings. Now that a campaign has been chosen – Fair Funding for Education – it’s a great time for individuals to reconnect and join in. So I invite you to the launch meeting on Thursday Nov 14th in Trevose. Join in for dinner at 6 pm and program at 7 pm. Please contact me if you wish more information. (Note that in addition to the State Funding Education Campaign,  POWER regional groups will undertake a parallel activity for Voting Rights.)

As I write to you thousands of young people are trying to learn in unsafe buildings and huge classes; without updated textbooks; without sports, music and arts programs; without enough nurses, counselors and support staff. Pennsylvania has the worst funding gap between rich and poor school districts of any state, and school districts with the most students of color receive on average $2,000 per student less than their fair share. The disparity is clear in Bucks County–Bensalem is underfunded by $9.7 million every year, more than $1,200 per student. Bristol Borough schools are underfunded by $675 per student.
 
But we have a solution! We’re asking our representatives to pass HB 961 to put 100% of our state education funding through the Fair Funding Formula, which distributes money according to the needs of each district. On November 14 we come together to let our Representatives know that the time for change is now.
