Remarkable Power of Stimulus is a very different Sherlock Holmes novel. It is a combination mystery & romance. I’ll let you in on a little secret, one of my purposes for writing the first novel, These Scattered Houses, was to bring Holmes to America to meet the two women whose friendship gave rise to feminism & changed the history of the world, Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Anthony. I figured putting Sherlock Holmes in a situation where he was confronted by his own sexism would be easy for them. & His intelligence couldn’t deny the incontrovertible truth.
Remarkable is the natural consequence of that. Especially as Irene Adler returns to London after six years.
Don’t get me wrong, this is a historical murder mystery. And my approach to romance is as close as I can get to the beautiful literature that Gimone Hall wrote. She took the genre to a height very few novelists achieve today. I take Sherlock Holmes where no one else has. I bring in the other history of the day, women’s history. And as it did then, it changed everything.
Most writers of Holmes novels today think he is an old fossil embalmed in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories & for their approval one must continue that. But I’ve studied Doyle & find as Jeremy Brett did, that there are cracks in that marble. So once again I have taken the path less traveled. It is where my muse is taking me, so I believe Holmes also is tired of the old stereotype.
